Kayden Coleman was born a female, but began transitioning to male when he was nearing the end of his teens. Ten years later, while taking a pause from testosterone shots due to surgery, he discovered he was pregnant.

The 29-year-old had been gaining weight for weeks, explaining that “It felt like there was a pillow under my stomach, but there was no pillow,” he told the Daily Mail. In addition to fatigue, he also noticed that his nose was getting wider.

Coleman and his husband, Elijah, fell in love when they met and have been together for years, but didn’t expect to have kids. “It was a surprise,” Coleman told BuzzFeed. “I was off testosterone because I just had top surgery and wound up pregnant. We didn’t find out I was pregnant until I was already five months along.”

As a result, Coleman and Elijah had to figure out how to break the news to people who didn’t know Coleman was a transgender man. It was especially difficult to tell Elijah’s family, among others, but overall they’ve received support about the pregnancy and their daughter, Azelia.

To people who aren’t aware of transgender people and their rights, the situation may seem strange, but it’s actually quite simple. It’s not a matter of sexual orientation, but rather gender. Coleman, even as a woman, had always been attracted to men — but he had always associated with the opposite sex (think gay man trapped in a female body). While Coleman’s body may have genetically been female, and still contains the necessary hormones sex organs to get pregnant, he identifies as male — something that should be respected.

Azelia has two loving dads who believe they’ll be an excellent duo to raise her and are fighting anti-transgender and anti-gay stigma while doing so.

“We are more than capable of loving our children just as much and just as efficiently as any other parent,” Coleman told BuzzFeed. “Our children will not be any more confused or bullied about my being trans than any other kid is about something like having a single parent.”
