With the start of every season of football comes the start of tailgating season. Tailgating is the act of parking a car in the parking lot of the stadium you favorite team plays in, hours before the game is scheduled to start, and drinking, eating, and generally having a good time. Some people take that drinking bit to the extreme, and many stadiums end up with drunk or nearly drunk fans in the seats.

BACtrack, a San Francisco-based leader in breathalyzers, has released a report examining the average blood alcohol content (BAC) of the NFL fans by team affiliation, from the first game of the preseason until Oct. 26. Using data collected anonymously from BACtrack’s mobile app and Twitter's map of NFL fan allegiance to associate BAC results with NFL teams across the country, BACtrack found out who the drunkest fans in the NFL were.

Fans of the Buffalo Bills were found to be the drunkest, with an average BAC of 0.076 percent. Fans of the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles came in second and third, respectively, with BAC levels of 0.069 percent. Fans who were the most sober cheered for the Cincinnati Bengals and had a BAC of 0.015. BACtrack also found that nearly one-third of all fans had an average BAC level of 0.06 or higher on game days, a “level at which judgement and self-control are inhibited.”

Although BACtrack found that team record did not indicate how drunk fans were, they did find that the further the season progressed, the higher BAC levels became.

BACtrack released a statement regarding the results: “ Our goal is to shed light on alcohol consumption habits so consumers can make smarter decisions when drinking. We hope this report will make consumers more aware of how much alcohol they consume when drinking at a football game or out at a bar with friends, so they can ultimately stay safe.”
