When Ken Wayne Broskey, 70, was diagnosed with stage 4 oropharyngeal cancer, he applied to be an Uber drive. Broskey wanted to raise enough money to pay off the house he shares with his daughter and grandchildren, Fox News reported. When he revealed as much to one of his riders Roland Gainer, 22, Gainer felt “compelled to help.”

So, Gainer set up a Go Fund Me account to help raise the $90 thousand Broskey needed for his house, in part because he reminded Gainer of his own mother's (successful) fight against cancer. He wrote, “as a single mother and waitress, [Broskey] knows that things will be hard without him and like any good father or grandfather; he worries about and wants to protect and provide for his family.” It was Gainer's hope to help, and bring peace to, Broskey and his family in his final days.

The account caught Uber’s attention, prompting the company to set up a supplementary campaign where riders could use the code “UberPartnerKen” to contribute. And within eight days, over 3,000 people donated to raise a total of $102,338. Gainer has since updated the account to say Broskey saved his house and they will no longer be taking any more donations in order to “allow other causes to be supported.”

"I'm very comfortable with dying," Broskey said. "Like I told Roland, if I could be in my death bed knowing my daughter is taken care of, it would make dying much easier.”
