A West Side man charged Sunday for stealing an ambulance while the paramedics and a patient were inside was ordered held on $50,000 bail.

Jimmy McCoy, 27, of the 4800 block of West Superior Street, occupied the driver's seat of Chicago Fire Department Ambulance and drove away as two paramedics worked on his diabetic friend in the back.

"They began to feel the ambulance move," Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Michael Cheronis said at the hearing before Cook County Judge James R. Brown. "He was driving his friend to the hospital,” Chernois added.

Police and firefighters were notified and caught up with the moving ambulance.

McCoy was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle. His is scheduled to appear in court on October 15.

The patient was transferred to another ambulance following the incident. No injuries were reported.
