Bipolar disorder is a mental condition, also referred to as manic depression, which causes extreme shifts in mood, along with fluctuations in energy and activity levels of the patient suffering from it.

The disorder is a serious mental illness that restricts the patient’s ability to carry out day-to-day tasks and has the potential to destroy relationships, both professional and personal. According to the American Psychological Association, the emotional imbalance can also lead to individuals contemplating suicide in some severe cases.

There are two categories of symptoms of the disorder.

Manic Episode Symptoms

  • A feeling of euphoria.
  • An inflated sense of self-esteem.
  • The judgment may be impaired temporarily.
  • Rapid talking, together with a very fast line of thought.
  • Indulging in high-risk behavior, including aggression.
  • Getting distracted with greater ease.

Depressive Episode Symptoms

  • A feeling of emptiness and despair.
  • Bouts of extreme sadness.
  • Insomnia and sleep-related problems.
  • Suicidal thoughts, in extreme cases.
  • Anxiety over small things.
  • Unexplained fatigue and lack of will to do things.
