The new breathable caffeine product that’s going to appear at stores in New York and Boston next week is concerning the public about the possible affect it may have on teens.

Senator Charles Schumer said that the caffeine breathable product could be harmful to young people.

As reported in the Associated Press, Schumer said that the product, AeroShot Pure Energy should be reviewed by the FDA, but the product is not considered a drug.

The AeroShot, invented by Harvard Professor David Edwards, is a lipstick sized canister that is used to inhale caffeine in powdered form in order to get a convenient energy boost without the calories.

It is an ingestible energy dietary supplement that releases to powder into your mouth and is then swallowed.

Each canister contains 100 mg of caffeine and a mix of B vitamins and is marketed to be “safe” and “healthy,” but some like Schumer don’t think it will be healthy and rather harmful.

Schumer said that he’s afraid young adult will use this product as a club drug, so they can drink until they drop.

But Tom Hadfield, CEO of the company that developed the product said in a release that the product is “safe.”

"It is a safe product that delivers caffeine with a mix of B vitamins to the mouth for quick ingestion, and it does not contain the mystery chemicals found in some other energy products like Taurine or glucuronic acid. Furthermore, caffeine has been proven to offer a variety of potential benefits for healthy individuals when it is consumed in moderation, from providing energy to enhancing attention and focus."

But the release states that AeroShot is “not designed to have its contents poured into alcoholic beverages, and it is not intended for mixing with any liquids.”
