Canadian health authorities have ordered recall of a home screening device for the early detection of breast cancer, Breastlight after they found that there is no evidence it works.

The device is made by PWB Health Ltd. Health Canada analyzed the device for its safety and effectiveness and found it may present a potential risk to women using it for early detection of breast cancer.

"But there is no clinical evidence that the Breastlight can be used effectively as a screening device for the early detection of breast cancer," Health Canada said in an advisory.

PWB is recalling the product and has asked pharmacies and other distributors to stop selling the device.

Health Canada is working with Canada Border Services to ensure that the product is not imported into the country.
