The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement on Friday indicating that counterfeit Botox have been found in the US supply chain. Botox is used to treat headaches, underarm sweating, overactive bladder and, as everyone knows, to treat wrinkles.

Real Botox is made by Allergan Inc, a pharmaceutical company. The fake product is sold by "Online Botox Pharmacy," "Onlinebotox.com," and "Onlinebotox." Although counter to the name of the company, it does not sell the product on the Internet, but rather sends faxes targeted at medical professionals and offers their 'product' at significantly lower prices than the official one.

"FDA cannot confirm that the manufacture, quality, storage, and handling of these products follow U.S. standards," the agency said.

The FDA release statement on its website that the outer box of the fake Botox is counterfeit, and the bottle inside is foreign and not approved for sale in the United Sates.

The problem is that the company is illegally selling the product which is sourced from companies overseas that may not be licensed to produce the product. The product could be mislabeled, adulterated, face, contaminated, infective or unsafe.

Botox, or Botulinum Toxin is most toxic substances to animals and humans. If it is breathed in small quantities, it would shut down the muscles that control breathing and would kill quickly. It is so powerful that it has been estimated that 1 teaspoon of the purified poison has the potential to kill 1.2 billion people.

It is for this reason that proper controls and FDA oversight for this specific drug are extremely important.
