Chronic depression happens to the best of us, and while life should be lived, this mental condition often leads to a state of apathy that can last weeks, months and even years.

In most cases, this can stem from circumstances that have caused disappointment and frustration to the person in question but even though might feel helpless under these conditions, it is important to note that you can have control over it far more easily than you can imagine.

So here is a list of tips in order to cope with depression:

Tip #1: Avoid smoking and drinking

A healthy body is a healthy mind, and while indulges (and on occasion, overindulges) in wine and tobacco, this isn’t very good for those who are in a state of chronic depression. While most people resort to alcohol in order to feel better, this condition is worsened in the long run.

Tip #2: Take deep breaths

Bouts of depression basically stem from negative thoughts, and experts suggest that one should take deep breaths before doing so. What this will do for you is keep you calm and bring you back to reality.

Tip #3: Choose some form of daily exercise

This is a must-do for those who suffer from chronic depression as it will result in the release of endorphins (the feel-good hormones) that will not only ease the pain (due to the internal dialogue) but will also help you feel relaxed and good about yourself. Being out in the sun can be good for those who are depressed as well.

Tip #4: Eat healthy

Drawing on the paradigm of a health mind and body, changing your diet can turn out to be a good thing. While depression can reduce one’s appetite, eating the wrong food can make it worse.

Tip #5: Good sleep is a must

Most people who are depressed stay in bed all day long or do not sleep at all. These extremes must be avoided, and one must try to maintain a regular schedule.
