South Carolina resident Melissa Mantor, 31, was shocked and embarrassed when she was approached by a Planet Fitness employee who told her to leave the gym due to her workout attire. Mantor had worn the same tank top to the supposed “Judgement Free Zone” before, so she was admittedly confused over what had changed this time around. At 18 weeks pregnant with a baby bump that was just starting to protrude, Mantor could only think of one reason why she would be asked to leave her longtime fitness facility.
"I was on the treadmill for about 10 minutes before I was approached by a girl who came up to me telling me that she is going to have to ask me to leave," Mantor told ABC News4. "I was very confused by this and thought I may have heard her wrong. She told me again that I am not able to continue my work out until I change my clothes because I am in violation of their dress code."
Mantor, who is already mother to a 3-year-old, said that her tank top does tend to ride up during her workout but said it had never been a problem in the past. The employee who approached her said she was in breach of the gym’s dress code because her “belly was hanging out.” After the employee handed her an oversized T-shirt to cover up her belly, she ended her workout, returned home, and immediately phoned the manager of the gym, who did not return her call.
When she returned to Planet Fitness the following day to cancel her account, a different employee told her that the tank top she wore was “obviously” in violation of the gym’s dress code. A Planet Fitness representative later responded to Mantor offering her a free month of membership ($10), which she promptly turned down.
Take a look at the gym's dress code below:
