Some people find their calling at a young age and follow it for the rest of their life. Florence “Seesee” Rigney is one of those people. Rigney started as a student nurse at the Tacoma General School of Nursing in 1946 at the age of 21, something she had been dreaming of since she was a young girl. Now, almost 70 years later, Rigney still brings the same enthusiasm and affection for her career path as she did over half a century ago while celebrating her 90th birthday.

In a video posted by Rigney’s colleague in the Multicare Health System, Martie Schultz, Rigney, and fellow staff at Tacoma General Hospital can be seen holding a very special birthday celebration. Rigney, sporting a pink sash and a tiara, received a welcomed surprise complete with flowers and a letter from Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) thanking “the oldest practicing nurse in the United States.”

“SeeSee Rigney, an operating room nurse at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, WA, celebrates her 90th birthday with her coworkers, and six decades of nursing,” Schultz explained in the video description. “She is an inspiration to all! God bless you my friend. We love you and can only hope to have half of the energy you have at your age.”
