Exactly a year ago, Fitbit recalled all of its Fitbit Force products following complaints of skin rashes. But it seems the Fitbit Surge is facing similar problems, as complaints and photos have popped up through Twitter. The Fitbit Surge is the company’s higher end performance watch and fitness tracker. It’s capable of GPS tracking as well as monitoring heart rate, sleep, steps taken, and floor climbed, among other functions. However, in order to maintain consistent measures, it’s meant to be worn constantly.

“The reactions we are seeing with new products are not uncommon with jewelry or wearable devices that stay in contact with the skin for extended periods,” Fitbit said in a statement. “According to our consulting dermatologists, they are likely from wearing the band too tight; sweat, water, or soap being held against the skin, under the device; or from pressure or friction against the skin, and should resolve quickly when users take a break from the device, usually within hours or days.”

Speaking to TechCrunch, Fitbit said only a limited percentage of users reported skin irritation. The company also suggested they follow the guidelines included with the product, which warn that “prolonged contact may contribute to skin irritation or allergies in some users,” and that if this should occur, the user can either remove the device for a little bit or wear it over a piece of clothing — though this might hamper the device’s function.

Regardless of who’s at fault for this, it should go without saying that anyone wearing these for extended periods should give their wrists a rest.
