Due to two customers who complained about finding pieces of plastic in the packaging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a recall on Monday of two products manufactured by Kayem Foods and sold by Trader Joe’s grocery stores: the Trader Joe’s brand “Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage” and the al fresco brand “Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage.”

On Monday, the USDA released a report outlining the terms of the recall:

12-oz. packages of Trader Joe’s brand “Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage” with the case code 9605 and use by/freeze by dates of “4 22 15,” “4 25 15,” and “4 29 15.”

8-oz. packages of al fresco brand “Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage” with the case code 9709 and use by/freeze by dates of “JUN 13 2015” and “JUN 20 2015.”

In total, Kayem Foods is recalling approximately 59,203 pounds of the sausage. So far, neither the company nor the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has received any reports of injury. The USDA has established the recall as a Class II recall. Under this distinction, the agency believes there is “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”
