Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona said in a video statement posted online on Sunday that she will resign from Congress but said she would return.

“I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week,” she said. “I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.”

In the message she said she didn't remember much "from that horrible day" when alleged gunman Jared Lee Loughner attempted to assassinate her at a meeting with her constituents in Tucson, Ariz. Six other people died that day.

Loughner has not yet been tried for his alleged crimes pending a psychological treatment which could make him competent to be tried.
