Do you use albuterol inhalers to help manage asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or another respiratory disease? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert regarding a voluntary recall of all unexpired albuterol sulfate inhalation aerosols manufactured by Catalent Pharma Solutions for Perrigo Pharmaceutical Company in Minneapolis.

There is nothing wrong with the medication itself, but there have been thousands reports to the manufacturer of the inhaler becoming clogged, reducing the flow of the medication to the patient. “This recall is to the retail level,” the statement said. “FDA urges patients to continue using the inhaler they have on hand.”

The FDA recommends:

  • Seeking emergency care if needed
  • Continuing to use the inhaler and contact your doctor If necessary
  • Having extra inhalers on hand in case one doesn’t work properly
  • Asking your doctor or pharmacist what you should do if you have one of the inhalers
