Apple cider vinegar is made by adding bacteria and yeast to juice from crushed and squeezed fruits. So is this natural miracle product all that it’s cracked up to be?

We’ve debunked some reported benefits of consuming and applying apple cider vinegar for your health and wellness.

Apple cider vinegar has been rumored to speed up your metabolism and weight loss but it doesn’t, according to Everyday Health.

"Like with most supplements, people make a lot of claims based on absent or extremely poor data. Virtually no [scientific literature] comes up for this, and what does is usually tiny, not well-done studies in obscure journals." Scott Kahan, MD, MPH., told SELF.


A 2007 study linked apple cider vinegar with regulated blood sugar, which offers benefits for those with type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that two tablespoons before bed with a snack resulted in lower blood sugar levels the next morning.

The validity of these findings are questionable, however, because there were only 11 participants.

A recent study found increased levels of good bacteria in the guts of mice who consumed apple cider vinegar diluted in drinking water. In humans, this could actually reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal disease ulcerative colitis.

"If you get raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, it contains the 'mother,'" Abby Langer, RD, explained to SELF. "That consists of enzymes, proteins, and probiotics which leach into the liquid," she explains.
