Celiac disease and other types of gluten intolerance inevitably impose sweeping dietary restrictions. Everyone knows that beer, bread, cakes, and pastries are off the table immediately. However, many are unaware that the list goes on.

The Huffington Post reports that gluten hides in a wide variety of less obvious foods, including pickles, candy and even meat. In addition, dietary supplements, vitamins, and certain medications may also contain traces of the protein. For this reason, experts urge gluten intolerant consumers to read every label – even if the product isn’t technically food.

"It's basically the same challenges as with food," says Rachel Begun, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "If wheat starch is identified, obviously then that medication is off limits."
